Observed annually on 3 March, World Hearing Day raises awareness about the importance of early hearing care and regular screening. Hearing loss often develops gradually, and many people do not recognise the early signs until communication, work performance or daily interactions are affected.
Prioritising your hearing health helps protect your long-term wellbeing and overall quality of life.
Why early hearing screening is important
Untreated hearing loss can affect far more than your ability to hear clearly. Its impact can extend into your emotional, cognitive, social and physical wellbeing:
- Communication becomes harder – Conversations that once felt natural may start to feel stressful or exhausting.
- Social withdrawal may increase – Difficulty hearing in noisy environments, such as restaurants or family gatherings, can lead to avoiding social situations.
- Feelings of isolation can develop – Reduced social interaction may contribute to loneliness, anxiety or depression.
- Safety risks may rise – Reduced awareness of your surroundings can make it harder to hear alarms, approaching vehicles or verbal warnings.
- Cognitive strain increases – When hearing is compromised, the brain works harder to decode sound, diverting energy away from memory and thinking processes.
- Brain stimulation decreases – Reduced sound input may affect how the brain processes information over time and may accelerate cognitive decline if left unmanaged.
Early detection through a hearing test or hearing screening can help identify concerns before they worsen. With timely intervention and appropriate care, many hearing challenges can be managed effectively.
Common early signs of hearing loss include:
- Frequently asking people to repeat themselves
- Turning up the television or radio volume
- Difficulty hearing in noisy environments
- Feeling that others are mumbling
- Ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in the ears (tinnitus)
- Difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds, such as birds, children’s voices, or consonants like ‘s’ and ‘f’
If you recognise any of these symptoms, it may be time to consider a screening.
