Gut feelings – why your gut matters more than you think

You’ve heard people talk about “listening to your gut” but did you know your gut might be talking back?

Your gut, also called your digestive system, is home to trillions of tiny living things that affect everything from your energy levels and mood to your immune system and weight. South African women juggle long workdays, fast food, stress, and antibiotics, so it’s no surprise that our gut health often suffers. But here’s the good news: small changes can make a big difference.

What exactly is “gut health”?

Your gut runs from your mouth all the way to your colon – it’s the system that digests food, absorbs nutrients, and removes waste. Inside it lives an entire community of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms known as your gut microbiome.

When your gut microbiome is healthy and balanced, your body runs smoothly. When it’s out of balance because of poor diet, illness, or stress, you may start to feel the effects throughout your body.

Why good gut health is so important

1. It boosts your immune system

About 70% of your immune system lives in your gut. A healthy gut helps your body fight off infections, which is especially important during flu season and for people with chronic illnesses.

2. It affects your mood and mental health

Your gut and brain are deeply connected, communicating through what’s called the gut-brain axis. When your gut bacteria are balanced, they help produce feel-good chemicals like serotonin, which can improve mood and reduce anxiety.

3. It helps manage weight and prevent disease

A healthy gut supports metabolism, blood sugar control, and fat storage. People with more diverse gut bacteria tend to have lower risks of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

Signs your gut might be in trouble

Warning signs that your gut health might need attention:

  • Bloating, gas, or constipation
  • Diarrhoea or irregular bowel movements
  • Constant tiredness or brain fog
  • Skin problems like acne or eczema
  • Frequent colds or low immunity
  • Food cravings, especially for sugar
  • Mood changes, anxiety, or low mood

How to improve your gut health

You don’t need expensive supplements or fancy detox teas. The secret to a happy gut is a balanced lifestyle and whole foods.

1. Eat more fibre

Fibre feeds the “good” bacteria in your gut. TOP TIP: Eat more fruit and vegetables, whole grains, beans, lentils, and chickpeas.

2. Add fermented foods

Fermented foods contain probiotics – health-promoting bacteria. TOP TIP: Try amasi, yoghurt with live cultures, sauerkraut, kimchi, or kefir (a fermented milk drink now sold in many South African supermarkets).

3. Stay hydrated

Water helps your gut move food smoothly and supports digestion.

4. Move your body

Exercise improves gut motility and encourages healthy bacteria to grow. TOP TIP: Even a brisk 20 minute walk a day helps.

5. Manage stress

Your gut reacts to stress – ever had “butterflies” before a big event? Chronic stress can harm gut bacteria. TOP TIP: Try deep breathing, stretching, or a short mindfulness break each day.

6. Use antibiotics carefully

Antibiotics can save lives – but they also wipe out good gut bacteria. TOP TIP: Always take them only when prescribed and follow up with gut-friendly foods.

When to get help

If you have long-term bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, or unexplained weight changes, it’s best to talk to a doctor or dietitian. They can check for underlying issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), food intolerances, or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

The top-to-bottom line

Your gut health is the foundation of your overall health – influencing everything from mental clarity and skin condition to hormonal balance and energy levels. By feeding your body the right foods and caring for your gut, you’re investing in your long-term wellbeing.

So next time you’re tempted to skip veggies or grab a fizzy drink – think of your gut. Treat it kindly, and it’ll take care of you.
