Effective leadership is rooted in passion for the cause – in this case making quality healthcare more affordable and accessible. If we make a profit it is ploughed straight back into the Fund so that we can give you more value for your money. We also use this profit to help keep healthcare costs down for you. We have a management team with a wealth of experience to ensure that Bonitas runs smoothly. They are supported by an independently elected Board of Trustees to ensure that our members’ interests are always put first.
Board of Trustees
We’re governed by an independent Board of Trustees who clearly demonstrate the diversity of our member base. The Board is made up of independent professionals, with distinctive expertise in the health, legal, financial and business sectors, who act on behalf of our members.
S. Claassen Acting Chairperson
Mr Claassen has more than 20 years of successful proven experience in the pharmaceutical and medical industry and extensive knowledge of the total healthcare industry (including medical aids). He has excellent skills in strategic growth and business development and very competent in corporate governance and financial management.
Mr Bagg is a qualified Actuary with 40 years of actuarial, financial management and consulting experience. He currently serves as Statutory Actuary for a number of life insurance companies and is a Trustee on various retirement funds. In addition, he holds directorships at life insurance and re-insurance companies.
Mr Cowlin has 23 years’ experience in the medical aid industry and has been involved in several aspects of the industry including administration, marketing, product design and managed care. He has held various top management positions within Medscheme and was the Managing Director of Aid for AIDS for 10 years.
Mr Komane holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering Business Management from the University of Warwick. He is currently employed as Group ER Manager for Aveng. Prior to this, he served as the Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers. He brings with him extensive experience in strategic corporate management and negotiations, has served on numerous boards in various capacities and acquired extensive knowledge as a non-executive director and trustee.
Ms Lesunyane holds a BA degree from the University of South Africa. She is the founder of Lesunyane Enterprises and works as a Claims Consultant in the information office of the Road Accident Fund.
Ms Martin holds various qualifications that include, among others, Leadership Skills, Unfair Labour Practices, as well as Disciplinary and Investigation Processes. She is currently employed by the Groote Schuur Hospital, is a member of the Public Servants Association (PSA) and acted as Chairperson of the PSA at the hospital.
H. E. Ephraim Nematswerani
A medical practitioner, Dr Nematswerani has a wealth of experience in the healthcare industry. He holds a MBChB degree from the University of Natal, a Masters in Medical Science (Sports Medicine) and postgraduate diplomas in Occupational Health and Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
Mr Pretorius has more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry with extensive leadership experience in agency management. His in-depth understanding of financial needs and the value chain within the financial services sector will prove invaluable to the Scheme. Since leaving the financial services field, Mr Pretorius’ ambition led him to start up his own property business, Rentrunners, in 2012, which he continues to run.
Ms Usher is a qualified Chartered Accountant with 25 years’ senior executive Board experience across numerous industries including medical schemes, fast goods, industrial manufacturing, conservation tourism and emerging economic empowerment sectors. She possesses excellent skills in corporate governance, financial management, commercial and strategic growth and skills development. She is currently the Chief Financial Officer of Great Plans Conservation Ltd, an eco-tourism operating in South Africa and abroad.
M. G. Netshisaulu
Mr Netshisaulu is the holder of an M.Com in Taxation. He is a registered Tax Practitioner with the South African Institute of Taxation Professionals and a member of the Compliance Institute of South Africa. He is currently employed as a Financial Strategic Analyst at the University of South Africa and is studying towards an LLB degree.

G. Van Emmenis Principal Officer
Gerhard has an MCom qualification from the University of Pretoria and a Diploma in Healthcare Management from the University of Luton. He has extensive experience in the healthcare industry, including HR management, client services, and as an administrator in Managed Care. He is no stranger to the management of medical schemes, and was Principal Officer of two others before joining Bonitas.
C. Sanqela Chief Financial Officer
Charlotte is a qualified Chartered Accountant, registered with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and she holds a Senior Management Development Programme certificate from Stellenbosch University. She is currently enrolled for an MCom (Accounting) and has vast experience in financial services and wealth management.
K. Marion Chief Operations Officer
Kenneth joined Bonitas in July 2014 as the General Manager responsible for operations. Prior to this, he served as the Bonitas Senior Fund Manager responsible for administrative management. He has managed a number of closed schemes and has a total of 18 years of experience in medical scheme operational management, most of which was at Medscheme, our administrator.
