Effective leadership is rooted in passion for the cause – in this case making quality healthcare more affordable and accessible. If we make a profit it is ploughed straight back into the Fund so that we can give you more value for your money. We also use this profit to help keep healthcare costs down for you. We have a management team with a wealth of experience to ensure that Bonitas runs smoothly. They are supported by an independently elected Board of Trustees to ensure that our members’ interests are always put first.
Board of Trustees
We’re governed by an independent Board of Trustees who clearly demonstrate the diversity of our member base. The Board is made up of independent professionals, with distinctive expertise in the health, legal, financial and business sectors, who act on behalf of our members.
Stephen Claassen Acting Chairperson
Stephen has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical field of healthcare and extensive knowledge of the health industry. He has held several directorship roles and been a board member for various companies. Stephen is also currently responsible for New Business Development at Activo Health, where he is a shareholder.
Jonathan is an actuary with over 30 years in actuarial management and consulting and brings a wealth of experience to the Bonitas Board. He is also a statutory actuary for a number of Life Insurance Companies and is a Trustee on various Retirement Funds. In addition, he sits on the Wits Board of Hospice.
Rodney has 23 years of experience in the medical aid industry. His expertise includes administration, marketing, product design and managed care. He has held top management positions within Medscheme, and was the MD of Aid for AIDS for 10 years. He has an interest in disease management and believes that members can be empowered to take control of their own health if enrolled in programmes.
Oupa holds a MSc degree in Engineering Business Management from the University of Warwick. He is the current Group Employee Relations Manager for Aveng. Prior, he served as the Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers. He has experience in strategic corporate management and negotiations, has served on numerous boards, and has vast knowledge as a non-executive director and trustee.
Maria holds a BA degree from the University of South Africa. She is the founder of Lesunyane Enterprises and works as a Claims Consultant in the information office of the Road Accident Fund.
Faldela has a number of qualifications across a variety of disciplines that include, Leadership Skills, Unfair Labour Practices and Disciplinary and Investigation Processes. She is currently employed by Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, is a member of the Public Servants Association (PSA) and acted as chairperson of the PSA at the Groote Schuur Hospital.
Yvonne holds a National Diploma in Marketing and is currently employed by Telkom SA as a Development Co-ordinator. She is also the Secretary of the Communication Workers’ Union.
Dr Ephraim Nematswerani
Dr Nematswerani, a medical practitioner, has a wealth of experience in the healthcare industry. He holds an MBChB degree from the University of Kwa Zulu Natal, a Masters in Medical Science (Sports’ Medicine) and post-graduate diplomas in Occupational Health and Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
Otto has more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry including extensive leadership roles in agency management. His in-depth knowledge of financial needs and value chain within the financial services sector, has proved invaluable to Bonitas. Since leaving the financial services, his entrepreneurial genes have taken over, resulting in his own property business, Rentrunners, being born in 2012.
Jacqui holds a BCom degree and a Diploma in Accounting, from KwaZulu-Natal University. She has been a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) since 1982 and has served them in various capacities during her career. She is the Chief Financial Officer at Great Plans Conservation Ltd, an eco-tourism business operating in South Africa and a number of foreign countries.

Gerhard Van Emmenis Principal Officer
Gerhard has an M.Com qualification from Pretoria University and a Diploma in Healthcare Management from the University of Luton. He has extensive experience in the healthcare industry, including HR management, client services, and as an administrator in Managed Care. He is no stranger to the management of medical schemes, and was Principal Officer of two others before joining Bonitas.
Charlotte Sanqela Chief Financial Officer
Charlotte is a qualified CA, registered with The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), she holds a Senior Management Development Programme certificate from Stellenbosch University. Charlotte is going for gold by completing her M.Com (Accounting), and has vast experience in financial services and wealth management within the healthcare discipline.
Kenneth Marion Acting Chief Operating Officer
Kenneth joined Bonitas in July 2014 as the General Manager responsible for operations. Prior to this, he served as the Bonitas Senior Fund Manager responsible for administrative management. He has managed a number of closed schemes and has a total of 18 years experience in medical scheme operational management, most of which was at Medscheme, our administrator.
